What does it mean to be a Project Owlnet collaborator? The Project certainly instills pride in its members, who share a passion for migratory owls and their preservation. But what do they commit to by being part of our network? In the past, it was simply a shared interest in banding Northern Saw-whet Owls and sharing knowledge/tips and banding recoveries. However, with the amazing dataset we have now amassed, it is time to make use of the project for conservation science. Our collaborators share a sense of duty to contribute data with conservation value to larger scale, regional analyses. We care about the species and therefore, we care about tackling its research and conservation needs together.
Project owlnet collaborators are expected to:
- Register their station through our registration form and maintain information about its operations and who the primary contact is for the station.
- Follow a repeated level of effort each year to produce quality data, as much as possible.
- Share information with the network, such as data, techniques, publications, and public talks
- Elevate the network by spreading awareness of our efforts on a regular basis
- Be willing to contribute annual summaries of station effort data and numbers of new birds banded and foreign recoveries.
- Collaborate with others to scale-up analyses of banding data
- Have a general willingness to allow annual data to be used in collaborative publications of “greater good” for filling knowledge gaps and resulting in conservation deliverables for Northern Saw-whet Owls and other owl species. Permission will be solicited prior to analyses and publications.
